Lucius A. Hemmer, born in 1965, grew up in Hanover and received musical training from an early age. He first studied bassoon with Prof. Klaus Thunemann in Hanover and later conducting with Prof. Luis Biava in Philadelphia, USA, and with Sergiu Celibidache in Munich. He attended conducting courses with, among others, one of the most internationally successful teachers, Ilya Musin, and received further important inspiration, above all from Valery Gergiev.
He was the long-standing director of various orchestras in Munich. International guest performances took him to Japan, Russia, the US and to almost all European countries. In addition, as part of his intensive activities, he has repeatedly been a guest conductor with a large number of orchestras in Armenia, China, Georgia, Korea, Slovakia, and Czechia.
As an artist, Lucius Hemmer has worked with world stars such as Leonard Bernstein, Sir George Solti, Sergiu Celibidache, and Valery Gergiev. He has performed with soloists such as Justus Frantz and Christoph Eschenbach and has appeared at the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival. In addition, he has made numerous recordings for radio and CD and has appeared in many television programs on ZDF and 3Sat.
Lucius A. Hemmer is the winner and recipient of several competitions, a scholarship holder of the Institute for the Promotion of Gifted Students of the Konrad Adenauer Foundation, and, in addition to his work as a conductor, is also a successful music manager. He has been the CEO and Artistic Director of the Nuremberg Symphony Orchestra since 2003. In addition, he has been a lecturer at the Nuremberg University of Music for over 15 years, while guest lecture activities brought him to the US as well. For his achievements in arts and business he was appointed honorary professor in 2019.
In his free time, he enjoys traveling with his family and his dog, visiting museums, playing sports, and cooking for friends.
